San Antonio – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men’s tennis team had a busy day at the opening round of the Roadrunner Invitational at the UTSA Tennis Center on Friday.
The competition continues on Saturday. UTRGV will start doubles at 9:30am and singles at 11:30am.
UTRGV Rookie Junior Emilian Burnell and freshman McAllen Memorial Alum Agustin Salazar Earned the first victory of Vaqueros’ career.
Burnell earned a stunning victory in the singles D draw quarterfinals, beating Texas A&M Corpus Christi’s Thomas Quesada Perez 6-1, 6-1. He will be in his D East semi-final at 11:30 am. Salazar said he beat SMU’s Eli Susser 7-6 (7-3) 6-2 in the singles H draw quarterfinals, and at 3pm he’ll be in the H East Semifinal.
Baquero Senpai Chris Lawrence, He also advanced to the Singles H Draw East Semifinals after defeating Oral Roberts’ Kevin Loyenberger 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

Sophomore Borna Devard When Carlo Chloro Playing as a pair in the A draw, they lost 2-0 to UTSA’s Alan Magadan/Sebastian Rodriguez 6-2 and Miami’s Nacho Serra Sanchez/Jackson Armistead 6-3. The Croatian duo will face Matthieu Peres / Lucas Schurdevin of TAMUCC in the A Draw South Stage Final at 9:30 am.
In the C doubles draw, Salazar was paired with Our Lady of the Lake’s Michael Canales. They lost him 0-2, in the quarterfinals he lost 6-2 to UTSA’s Garrett Skerry/Andrew Keane, and in the C draw West semifinals he lost to ACU’s Benjamin McDonald/Ethan Scribner, who made him 7 We lost -5. He will face Pinho/Brewer in the C Draw South Final scheduled for 10am. Salazar and Canales go head-to-head in the Singles H Draw East Semifinals.
senior citizen Te Kani Williams Lawrence played in the D doubles draw, losing 6-1 to SMU’s Alex Stafford/Eli Susser in the quarterfinal match. After getting a bye in Friday’s semi-final round, Williams/Lowrance will face ORU’s Aaron Brewer/Kevin Loyenberger in the D-Draw West final at 9:30 am.
In the singles match, Devald lost to Alan Magadan (UTSA) 6-3, 6-3 in the quarter-finals of the A draw. He is scheduled to face Jack Winkler in his West semi-final in an A draw at 1:30 p.m. 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Williams lost to his UTSA’s Andrew Keane he lost 3-6 7-5 7-5 and Whitehead lost to Norwyn 1-6 6-4 6-0.
